Wine either can't parse the altered cd-check instruction, or its reliant on a hard-coded filepath that isn't the same in wine as in Windows. This doesn't work easily on Ubuntu + wine. It then might (emphasis on might) have hacked the game exe to look at a folder on the desktop with an autorun.inf file, in place of the CD drive.
